Thailand Military Junta Continues to Suppress the Civic Freedom of Association and Assembly: Restoration of Democracy Overdue in Thailand

Seoul, Korea 24 May 2018 – On the 4th anniversary of the military coup in Thailand, the Thailand Junta has failed to deliver its promises of free and fair elections and the restoration of democracy. The people of Thailand came out to the streets demanding democracy on this anniversary. However, the Junta has severely suppressed the protests and restricted the basic freedom of association and assembly. As a result, fifteen pro-democracy youth activists are now in military custody as a result and face multiple charges of violating the ban of public assembly and obstruction of public order. Counter protests in support of the military government have also taken place but double standards applied as charges were not filed against them.

It has been over 4 years since the Coup d’etat by the Junta, they have failed to keep their promise to restore democratic rule and continues to repress civil and political liberties, imprison and silence dissidents, and impunity used for torture and other abuses.

The Asia Democracy Network stands in solidarity with those demanding democracy in Thailand. We demand the immediate release of the activists being detained.
