7th World Movement for Democracy Global Assembly
Lima, Peru | 2012 October 14-17
At the 7th global gathering of the World Movement for Democracy in Lima, Peru, the multi-stakeholders attending from Asia reached a consensus that a regional democracy network strengthening democracy in the region was needed. It was decided that the preparatory work to design such a network.

7th Community of Democracies Ministerial Conference
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia | 2013 April 27-29
The preparatory work after the Global Assembly in Lima came to fruition at the Community of Democracies Ministerial Conference in Ulaanbaatar when the Asian stakeholders agreed to establish a democracy network. The network was envisioned to act as a platform for like-minded democracy advocates to work together to promote and defend democracy. A task force was established to formulate the foundation of the launching of an official network.

The task force, consisting of civil society organizations from Asia, worked together over the course of seven months to develop the specifics of the democracy network. As a result, it was decided to launch a founding assembly in Korea in October 2013.

After the past year of preparations, the official civil society led Asia regional network that will aim to advocate, promote, and defend democracy was officially launched on October 27, 2013 in Seoul, South Korea. In the presence of approximately 300 participants from all over the world, the Asia Democracy Network was founded and set its roots to have its Permanent Secretariat in Seoul.

Secretary General

Ichal Supriadi is currently the Secretary General of the Asia Democracy Network and based in Bangkok, Thailand. Previous to his current position he worked as the Executive Director of the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL). Since 1998, Ichal have attended over 30 international elections observation missions in Asia. His advocacy journey started when he first engaged in the Indonesian student movement and then joined the independent elections monitoring committee KIPP as a district coordinator in 1998. In 2003, he held the position as executive director on the provincial level before joining ANFREL in 2016. He actively engages in the democracy movement and is the co-founder of Democracy Watch Indonesia (2001), co-founder of INDEPT Indonesia (2012). He obtained his M.A. in Human Rights from the Mahidol University, Thailand.

Senior Program Manager

Soo Suh is currently the Senior Program Manager at the Asia Democracy Network, managing and implementing ADN’s various programs to uplift the Asian democracy narrative to widely promote and defend democracy in the region. Ms. Suh has been with the ADN since 2013. She received her Master’s in the National Security Education Program’s (NSEP) Language Flagship Program for Korean at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and her Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is currently based in Seoul, Korea.

Senior Program Officer

Karel Jiaan Antonio Galang (Mr.) is the Asia Democracy Network (ADN)’s Senior Program Officer. He previously worked with the Asian Network for Free Elections (Anfrel; 11/2016 to 01/2020) as its Campaign and Advocacy Officer and focal point the organization’s programs in Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. He participated in at least 10 international election observation missions in Asia as an observer or analyst, and has published 9 election assessments and election observation manuals within his stint. Earlier, he also worked with the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections in the Philippines (Namfrel; 09/2014 to 11/2016) as a writer, researcher, and coordinator of its 2016 Presidential Election Observation operation which mobilized more than 100,000 volunteers from all over the country. A graduate of Political Sciences from the University of the Philippines in Manila, he is especially interested in the field of democracy studies, social dynamics, social movements, and civil society consolidation.

Sabra Zahid

Program Officer

Sabra Zahid is an Attorney-at-Law from Sri Lanka and currently serves as a Program Officer at the Asia Democracy Network.  With a background in law and human rights, Sabra has over 8 years of experience working in the non-profit sector in Sri Lanka. Having worked at organizations such as the Law and Society Trust, Transparency International, Democracy Reporting International, Sabra has contributed to projects focusing on elections, constitutional reforms, and human rights. Sabra is also a member of the Muslim Personal Law Reform Action Group in Sri Lanka, working towards reforming discriminatory family laws that disproportionately affect Sri Lankan Muslim women and girls. Sabra holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of London and a Master of Laws from SOAS University of London under a Chevening scholarship.

Finance and Administrative Officer

Ms. Sooyoung Kim is currently the Finance and Administrative Officer at ADN Headquarters in Seoul, Korea. She is an US Certified Public Accountant with experience in corporate and government administrative affairs as well as accounting. She previously worked with various public State agencies for fifteen years and several private sectors for five years.

Tess is a journalist, editor, and media consultant based in the Philippines. She is formerly the executive director of the Southeast Asian Press Alliance and regional editor of Inter-Press Service Asia-Pacific. A health freak, she occasionally whips up vegan dishes when she’s not dotting i’s and crossing t’s.
