Two Years Since Taliban Takeover – Statement Condemning Gender Apartheid and Urging Action for Fundamental Freedoms in Afghanistan

August 16, 2023 by ADN

Condemning Gender Apartheid and Urging Action for Fundamental Freedoms in Afghanistan

Two years since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, the Asia Democracy Network (ADN) and its member organizations continue to express deep concern over the extensive human rights violations committed by the illegal Taliban regime. We remain deeply troubled by the dire human rights situation, particularly its impact on women and girls.

The past two years have cast a somber shadow on Afghanistan and the global stage. The Taliban’s rise, accompanied by their disregard for democratic rights, has sparked grave concern. We condemn the systematic oppression faced by Afghan women and girls, trapped within a regime of gender apartheid.

ADN vehemently condemns the Taliban’s actions, which not only undermine democracy but also perpetuate gender-based discrimination and human rights violations. We urgently call on the international community to defend democratic principles and promptly address the dire human rights crisis in Afghanistan.

Democracy thrives when fundamental rights are upheld. The Taliban’s imposition of gender apartheid undermines these democratic principles, depriving women and girls of their rights to education, work, and public participation. We urge governments, international bodies, and civil society to prioritize restoring democracy and ending gender apartheid. Every individual, regardless of gender, must enjoy their democratic rights.

The international community must hold the Taliban accountable for their gross human rights violations, put an end to discrimination and gender apartheid, safeguard minorities, and ensure justice prevails. Urgent humanitarian assistance is imperative. The media plays a crucial role in exposing oppression and raising global awareness. ADN urgently calls for increased media attention on Afghanistan’s situation, shedding light on the suffering of its people and spurring immediate action.

ADN renews its commitment to stand with the people of Afghanistan, especially its women and girls, in their unwavering battle against gender apartheid and for democratic rights. We implore the international community to take immediate steps to restore democracy, uphold human rights, and forge a progressive future for all Afghans.
