[Information] ADN/I4/2013/NOV Launching of the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN)

March 21, 2014 by ADN

ADN/I4/2013/NOV

2014 December 27

Dear Friends,

We hope we find you well amidst your endeavors for democracy.

Continuing the momentum of the Asia Democracy Network (ADN) Launching, we are excited to announce the inaugural meeting of the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) that will take place from November 25-26 in Seoul hosted by the East Asia Institute (EAI).

As a key pillar within ADN, ADRN aims to establish a research network in Asia to promote de-mocracy and discuss the challenges that remain in democratic transition and/or consolidation.

The meeting will discuss the roles of think tanks in democracy-related issues, focusing on the added value of ADRN, addressing anti-corruption reforms, and sharing the various perspectives from respective country representatives on the role of research institutions in promoting democ-racy.

Through this gathering, ADRN expects to initiate dialogue among research institutions to define their effective role in the promotion of democracy.

ADRN’s leading group of experts who will attend the meeting include:

India Kaustuv Bandyopadhyay, Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA)
Indonesia Philips Vermonte, Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
Japan Yasushi Kudo, Genron NPO
Mongolia Damba Ganbat, Political Education Academy of Mongolia
Philippines Maxine Tanya Hamada, INCITEGov
South Korea Sook-Jong Lee, East Asia Institute
HeeYeon Cho, Sungkonghoe University
Sri Lanka Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Centre for Policy Alternatives
Taiwan Chin-en Wu, Asian Barometer
Thailand Thawilwadee Bureekul, King Prajadhipok’s Institute (KPI)
United States Christopher Walker, National Endowment for Democracy (NED)

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, this year’s meeting is by invitation only. We hope the success of this inaugural gathering will open up more opportunities for a wider range of partici-pation in the future.

ADN anticipates that ADRN will play a significant role in the promotion of democracy and hopes for a successful and fruitful meeting for everyone involved.

If you have questions or require more information, please contact Mr. Jin Seok Bae (jsbae@eai.or.kr), senior research fellow at the East Asia Institute.
