FoAA Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai Releases 3rd Thematic Report

May 21, 2014 by ADN

Below you will find the publicly released Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai’s 3rd thematic report to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The report was written after a consultation meeting that was organized by the World Movement for Democracy (WMD) and ADN on February 2-3, 2014 in Singapore.
The consultation was held with a focus on the status of at most risk vulnerable groups in the Asia region. A diverse panel of activists and rights defenders gathered to provide a more closer look at the situation on the ground.

Dear media, friends and partners:

The United Nations has publicly released Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai’s third thematic report to the Human Rights Council, in advance of Kiai’s presentation of the report to the Council in June. A copy of the report is attached, along with a press release containing quotes from Mr. Kiai.

The report focuses on the challenges facing those most “at risk” when exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful of assembly and of association. This category includes individuals and groups that are often relegated to the margins of society, both in their daily lives and in the exercise of their rights.

The report includes case studies from Canada, the United Kingdom, Russia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Ukraine, Kuwait, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Uganda, China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Costa Rica, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Viet Nam and more.

Kiai is tentatively scheduled to present the report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 10.

Regards,

Maina Kiai
