Cambodia: MP elect detained, released

July 25, 2014 by ADN

Great to hear news of the release of the recent detained MP elect and officer of the opposition party.

Dear Friends,

The current political agreement between ruling party  CPP and opposition party CNRP on 22 July  is an important start toward to many parts of the political solution and ease an immediate political tension / deadlock.

Thank you for support.   All seven detained  MP elect  and officer of the opposition party  were released.

For election reform  the agreement provides  promises to restructure the future NEC. The recruitment of NEC members is with engagement of the two political parties groups from the ruling party group and non-ruling party group holding seat the national assembly while current recruitment of the NEC members is only under the ruling party , CPP government. The  agreement for the NEC restructure  may not reach best practice and  principle on public/open selection of the independent NEC. The promises also is to create new voter list while it is not yet clear whether change new system or use current system of the voter registration.   They  also agreed to share balance power in the national  assembly.

Cambodian political groups have experienced the difficulties and challenges to implement the agreement effectively
