[ADN STATEMENT] Next on the Agenda for the Two Koreas: Democracy and Human Rights

May 2, 2018 by ADN

Next on the Agenda for the Two Koreas: Democracy and Human Rights

SEOUL – On 27 April 2018, a thaw on the Korean peninsula was witnessed as the two leaders of the Koreas had a historical meeting to discuss peace. Kim Jong Un became the first North Korean leader to make an official visit to South Korea to meet President Moon Jae-in at the Panmunjom, the joint security area located at the 38th parallel of the peninsula, which is the most heavily militarized border in the world. The two nations are technically in a state of war since no peace treaty was ever signed since the armistice was signed placing a halt to the 1950-53 Korean War.  We witnessed progress between the two countries as the two leaders agreed to sign a peace treaty by the end of the year officially ending the Korean War and cooperating to bring peace on the peninsula.

The Asia Democracy Network applauds the success of the summit where the two leaders took the first step towards peace and stability in the region. We hope that this is the first step to the address and realization of democratic values where human rights are protected on the Korean peninsula.
