South Korea’s snap presidential election on 3 June 2025—held in the wake of
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment following his controversial martial law decree—marks a watershed moment for the country’s democracy. The South Korean snap elections served as a crucial test of democratic resilience. With a record 79.38% voter turnout, the election became a powerful public response to authoritarian overreach and a demand for democratic restoration.
The decisive victory of opposition leader Lee Jae-myung reflects a broad call for political accountability, institutional reform, and national stability. Yet, the election also unfolded amid rising polarization, renewed civil-military tensions, economic uncertainty, and urgent domestic challenges—from demographic decline to persistent gender inequality.
To reflect on this critical juncture, the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL), in collaboration with the Asia Democracy Network (ADN) and other civil society partners, proposes a Post-Election Development Discussion. This online event aims to analyze the election outcome, highlight civic responses, and explore the path forward for democratic consolidation in South Korea and broadly Asia.
We hope you all can join us for the lively discussions and your direct questions for the speakers!
