[Statement] Standing with the Hong Kong 47: Condemnation of Unjust Sentencing and Call for Global Action

November 20, 2024 by ADN

November 20, 2024

Seoul. South Korea | The Asia Democracy Network strongly condemns the sentencing of 45 members of the Hong Kong 47, marking the largest-ever prosecution under Hong Kong’s repressive National Security Law (NSL). This trial is a grave affront to the principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and the rule of law.

The Hong Kong 47 represents the resilience of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. They are activists, academics, legislators, social workers, and community leaders who sought to engage in a peaceful democratic process by organizing a primary election to reflect the will of the people. Their actions—an effort to secure greater representation and accountability within Hong Kong’s Legislative Council—are not crimes but rather acts of civic responsibility. The use of the NSL to suppress such legitimate democratic aspirations is deeply troubling and sets a dangerous precedent for dissent and democratic expression in the region.

We are particularly alarmed by the sweeping charges of “subversion” for participating in this peaceful exercise. The disproportionate sentences handed down, coupled with the targeting of individuals who have already contributed greatly to their communities, demonstrate the Hong Kong authorities’ intent to eradicate any semblance of political pluralism. These actions starkly contrast with the Hong Kong people’s aspirations for greater democratic space and representation.

ADN stands in solidarity with the Hong Kong 47 and the broader pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. We urge the international community, including governments, civil society, and multilateral organizations, to strongly denounce these sentences and to hold the Chinese and Hong Kong governments accountable for their continued erosion of freedoms in the region.

We reaffirm our commitment to supporting democracy and human rights in Hong Kong and across Asia. The struggle for democracy in Hong Kong is not an isolated issue—it is part of a broader fight against authoritarianism in the region. ADN calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals imprisoned for their democratic beliefs and actions in Hong Kong.

Democracy thrives where dissent is protected – not criminalized.
