Sri Lanka Political Struggle Continue: Deeper Democracy Disruption

The Asia Democracy Network is deeply concerned with the current democracy struggle in Sri Lanka. The once political coalition that defeated the strong hold leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, are now in conflict when President Maithripala Sirisena removed Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe.
There are democratic institutions and principles at stake in the current political instability of Sri Lanka. The constitutionality of the removal of the PM needs to be reviewed in addition to the abuse of power to manipulate the results through the dissolve of the parliament and snap elections. This type of political exercise discredits democracy and leaves a negative precedent to Sri Lanka’s nation and unity building.
The ADN joins in solidarity with the civil society of Sri Lanka in expressing concern in regards to the current situation and urge all appropriate stakeholders to convene and work together to find an efficient solution to avoid further political division. We call on President Maithripala Sirisena to prioritize national interests and uphold democratic institutions and the constitution, to resolve the political instability. It is vital for Sri Lanka to have a leader that can guide the country to move forward towards prosperity through a democratic and peaceful government that values unity.
The Asia Democracy Network stands in solidarity with Sri Lankan democrats to continue to apply pressure in maintaining democratic principles during this time.
