Taiwan Elections: Reaffirming Democratic Values
The Asia Democracy Network congratulates the people of Taiwan for a successful presidential and legislative election. Through the practice of free and fair elections, the people of Taiwan have voiced their will.
It is not an overstatement that the elections were managed in a transparent and peaceful manner, with full citizen participation and with sufficient space for political parties to operate freely—all of which are fundamental elements for a healthy democracy.
We hope that the elections will empower the people of the Asian region with the realization of democratic values and democratic processes, through advocacy, solidarity, and cooperation..
We request the newly elected administration, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), led by Her Excellency Tsai Ing-wen, to encourage more vibrant civil society activity in the country. The ADN also calls on Taiwan to play a key role in furthering democracy, solidarity and cooperation in the Asian region.
