Gwangju, South Korea – The Gwangju Prize for Human Rights was established in 2000 in an effort to promote the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. The Prize goes to an individual or organization from all around the world who has made significant contributions to the advancement of human rights, unity, solidarity, and world peace in their community and country. This year’s laureate of Gwangju Human Rights Prize is Ms. Latifah Anum Siregar, a West Papua-based human rights lawyer from Indonesia. She has contributed to the conflict resolution in the region of West Papua, Indonesia, providing the assistance for victims of human rights abuses and political prisoners in West Papua. The special award was given to Sombath Somphone, a respected community development worker and founder of the Participatory Development Training Center (PADETC), actively involved in training the youth of Laos, promoting the sustainable development in rural area of Laos. Since 2012, Sombath has been missing. At this event, his wife, Ms. Shui Meng attended and gave a speech on behalf of Sombath.
