MESSAGE FROM THE ASIA DEMOCRACY NETWORK
ON THE OCCASION OF THE
20th ANNIVERSARY
OF THE WORLD MOVEMENT
FOR DEMOCRACY

This auspicious occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the World Movement for Democracy gives democracy advocates across the world the opportunity to reflect on the progress as well as the setbacks have made thus far. For the past twenty years, the World Movement has created spaces and opportunities for democracy advocates across the globe to build connections strengthening solidarity and importantly planting the seed of inspiration to next generation democracy actors. Their work has continued to empower and motivate democracy actors to continue to promote and defend democracy in their respective places in the world.  The World Movement has made significant contributions to consolidating democrats and persevering the norms and values of democracy from the most challenging stage of emerging and transitioning democracies to those that experienced the glory of democracy triumph.

The World Movement’s strongest value added in the democracy movement would be the ability to globally connect democracy advocates through its reach in all regions of the world as well as providing the platform for solidarity initiatives to emerge. The Asia Democracy Network (ADN) was conceptualized the World Movement’s 7th Global Assembly event held in Lima, Peru, October 2012.  Multi-stakeholders from Asia in Lima attending the Global Assembly identified the need for a regional network of democracy advocates to promote and defend democracy through solidarity and unity.  The Lima assembly provided the space to kick off the preparatory work, leading to the official launch, after various consultations, of the ADN on 22 October 2013 in Seoul, Korea. Since the launch, ADN has become the regional voice advocating democracy and the platform where silos are broken and various sectors come together in unison under the umbrella of democracy to promote and defend Asia’s democracy through our own narrative.

On behalf of ADN, we extend our deepest congratulations to the World Movement for 20 years of meaningful contribution and achievement to the democracy movement. We also thank all  stakeholders involved in this achievement. We wish the World Movement all the success for many more years to come and we hope it will continue facilitating and inspiring the democratic movement across the world.

ADN echoes the spirit expressed by Ms. Zainab Hawa Bangura, chairperson of the World Movement, in her message for all of us to prepare for the biggest threat to democracy in the coming years and hope the World Movement for Democracy will lead in navigating those challenges. In addition to facing the challenges of the democracy movement, we must also not forget the progress we have made thus far and not lose sight of hope and continue the movement through solidarity and unity.

In Solidarity,

Ichal Supriadi,

Secretary General
